Hong Kong and Japan - Perspective and Context

Today, I shared some aspects of my experience while in HK and Japan during the June Holidays. I didn't share on observation of Macau...another day perhaps.

Perhaps Si Lin is right ( I know that he thought I was not fair in my comments). I was quite aware of the 'biased' point of view with regards to the remarks I made about the people I met in HK and perhaps in Japan. The point of the sharing was to highlight how our rude disposition and 'I-am-not-happy-with-you' attitude can be a real turn-off......in any country, any community and any home.

In all fairness, HK is not that 'unpleasant'...it was probably the noisy and busy area that I was staying that I really didn't like. I had a lecturer from HK when I was at NUS, and he left a very good impression on me. He gave me the impression that most HK people were independent, intelligent and hardworking. Also while in HK, I was rather impressed with their environment-green policy, immigration officers and police officers, who were highly alert at the airport. One even stopped me to ask why I was carrying empty cupboards. Needless to say, food was great and at a bargain. Japan, though its products and places are pleasing to the eyes, ears and heart...is really incomprehensible, since little English is used. And quite honestly, behind the smiles and politeness, you aren't too sure how they really think of you, or foreigners in general(this didn't really bother me since I was there for a few days). Still, Japan, is really wonderful, if not for any other reason, other than the cool weather. You feel like you are in an air-conditioned room 24/7.

Well, just to share, to put things into perspective. Again, HK, as a tourist destination, not for me - as a teacher in the Singapore International School or to further one's study...... I am game.
